Open House

Come see where we have been and where we are going!
May 30th, 2009 - 11am - 6pm - Free Lunch Provided

On May 30th, we would like to invite you, your family and others you know who may be interested in the ministry of Camp Longridge to join us for our first annual Open House. All of our activities including the lake, Blob, Ropes Course and Paintball will be open for free use. Come and take a tour of our facilities, go down our 150ft water slide and join us for a free lunch! We want to share the vision for the future of our ministry and testify to what God has done at Longridge over the past 25 years.

What are the times for your Open House?
The gates of Longridge will be open May 23rd from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Your family is welcome to come as our summer staff will have lake activities (including blob, slide and zipline) operational. As time permits, we will also offer visitors the opportunity to experience our high ropes course (~ 2 hours) and paintball courses. We will serve lunch at 1:00 P.M. Tours will be available. The Camp Staff and Board of Directors look forward to meeting you. It is a free event and all we ask is that you RSVP with the information below.

What is the purpose of your Open House?
We would love the opportunity of sharing what God has done in our ministry and where God is leading us to grow. As a camp that is not supported by any denomination, we simply want to invite you to see our grounds and consider joining us for our summer camps, booking your own retreat, or joining us in our capital campaign. Of course, you are also welcome to just come, eat, swim and have a great day at the lake. Don’t worry, there will be no pressure or annoying salesmen!

How can I RSVP?
You can let us know you are coming either by calling 866.966.9805 or visiting our website (www.camplongridge.com). If you have friends that want to join you at the last minute, that’s fine as well. Again, your family is welcome.

How can I get more information about your ministry?
We encourage to check out our website (www.camplongridge.com) where you can see pictures and videos of our summer activities as well as find booking information for retreats. If you cannot attend our open house but still would like to visit, please call Scott (866.966.9805.) Also, please visit Frank Shivers’ website (www.frankshivers.com) to find out more information about his revival and speaking ministry.

Are there opportunities to support Longridge in other ways?
Yes! We have two annual workdays - February 21st and May 9th - in which we welcome skilled and unskilled workers to join with us in improving our facilities. We hope you might consider our workdays as a mission project for your church this year! For more information, please contact Scott (866.966.9805).

Staff Alumni

For over 30 years, the summer staff have been a central part of Longridge’s identity and ministry. Long after other aspects are forgotten, countless students remember who their staffers were and how they ministered to them. We are currently attempting to reconnect with many of those who have served us so faithfully over the years! If you know of a former Longridge staffer or are one yourself, please drop us a line. Also, we have a vibrant community of staff past and present in conversation in our Longridge Facebook Group.

Check our Summer Camp Pictures Archives. You have pictures? Email them here and they will automatically be added to the archives!

Student 2.0

Longridge 2.0 : Directed By Mark Shivers
July 6-10 : 2009 - $230

God has intentionally formed us with many senses, many ways in which to worship and engage our Creator. Why have neglected all but one or two for so long? Longridge 2.0 is about asking truthful and difficult questions and being ready to not end up with the answers we may like. Longridge 2.0 is about re-imagining what the world can be and seeking to live out these visions of a new reality. Longridge 2.0 is about a community of believers on a journey towards the kingdom.

2.0 is a small-group driven camp experience in which relational connections between students and God, students and staff and students with each other are nurtured and developed. As we learn when God declared that it is not good for humans to be alone, we are social beings who are created not to be isolated but to be a part of community. The ethic of this community arises from the inseparable call and model of Jesus who told the Jewish leader to love God with all his heart, mind, soul and strength and to love his neighbor as himself. In this way, 2.0 seeks to highlight the multiple dimensions of the salvation story that not only include individuals but also communities, countries and this world.

Following the way of Jesus who put it all on the line by coming to us not with an army but in a manger, we seek to operate with an ethic of risk. We intentionally design and create worship experiences that acknowledge the possibility and reality of failure, an inherent part of life in a broken world. We think hard about what it means to fail gracefully and then invite students into the creative process to join us in the risk-taking. Students co-create worship experiences for the morning chapel services and over the past 5 years, we have continuously awed by their creative and faithful explosions of grace.

Of course we have fun too as Godly play is an essential part of what it means to be faithfully human, living in one shared world together as those who have chosen to live our lives in the story of God. We laugh, swim, smile, cry and sweat together believing that being faithfully human in God’s image is a fully embodied life.

At the end of the week, our goal is holistic conversion. When you encounter God in deep ways, you are forever changed. When you encounter others in deep ways, whether it be staff or those in your small group, you are forever changed. You give a part of you and you receive a part of them. When this honest and open exchange occurs in the relational matrix among God, self and others, we begin to understand what it means to live into the Kingdom of God that threatens to change everything.

Meet our Director

Mark Shivers, graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA, licensed Baptist minister and current graduate student at Vanderbilt directs our Longridge 2.0 summer camps. Mark has always had a heart for pushing students and leaders alike to engage God in both new and ancient ways. Always seeking to engage the emerging culture, a week with Mark will urge you to ask and explore, seek and be sought, imagine and engage.

Summer Staff
Our Super Summer Camps utilize a staff of 18 college students. These students are selected to serve on our staff based upon their devotion to the Lord, exemplary lifestyle, involvement in the local church, biblical convictions and giftedness. It is our goal in their selection that your students will experience the highest quality of leadership and spiritual mentorship.

Staffers are assigned to each cabin and are responsible for the students of that cabin all week. He/she is their spiritual shepherd and overseer and seeks to foster growth both spiritually and emotionally in them through devotions, play, example and sharing.

Staff Praise Team
The Longridge Worship Team, formed from members of the summer staff, lead worship for Longridge 2.0 It is always amazing to see the talent and ability of these college students to meld together and be incredibly effective worship leaders. It is truly a special attribute of Longridge that the same staff who are with the students all day, lead them in worship during services. At 2.0, we seek to de-centralize the worship team as the focus of attention and move away from the concert model and develop an alternative theology of “worship.”

Striving to be Fully Human

There are times in life that are hard to describe. There are moments that are difficult to express.
When a person is fully engaged into an activity, totally immersed in the moment with all the senses engaged, this person is gets a glimpse into what it is to be fully human. That first date when all you notice is the other person and although you’re in a loud restaurant, the rest of the world fades away. That moment on the football field when all stress and worry are driven to the background by the adrenaline induced surge of passion that focuses all energy on the now. The times where you fully lose yourself; when you let go to fully live into a moment.

And you exit exhausted, clear-headed, still, peaceful, calm. You can’t describe it but there was something right about that time, something healthy, and something that connected at a deep level. You felt alive. What if we were to seek to live every moment in that way?
What if we desired to engage every minute with all of ourselves?

I think about God. Creation. God in the moment. Pouring God’s self into the act of imagination and creativity. Incarnation. God pouring all of God’s self into the moment. Death. Empty Tomb. God doesn’t do anything half-hearted. There is this deep passion within that urges God to invest all of God’s self.
And we were created in God’s image. Created with this potential for passion. And maybe these moments are brief glimpses into what it is to be fully human, reconnected with ourselves, the holy and others. Glimpses that teach us what life can be. 2.0 seeks to be a place and time to follow our God into life.

Longridge is one of few camps in which campers stay in cabins with staff throughout the week. The bond that forms in this arrangement is an intentional outgrowth of our desire to grow relationships between each other and with a loving God. FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS CONCERNING ROLE OF LEADERS

For more info, download our Camp Info Packet!

Q: What is my role as the student minister to the Staffer?
A:  Join your heart with him/her by taking time to get to know them. Share specifically what your burden is for your campers whether it be for salvation , renewal or a deeper spiritual walk. Communication is a major key to an enjoyable and productive camping experience. Don’t feel threatened by their leadership. Remember they are here to under gird you and help your students.

Q: What will I be doing while my campers are involved with activities?
A: You have complete control over your schedule. You do not have to participate but we welcome you too as much as you like!

Q: Will I be able to join in with my kids in what they do?
A: Absolutely!  You are welcome to be involved in as much or as little of the program as you desire. If you need time to kick back and relax, that’s okay.

Q: Are we required to have leaders come with our students?
A: While we welcome leaders, many churches are unable to send leaders with their students to Longridge. Our staff makes sure that your students are well supervised and cared for. Please make sure to give accurate contact numbers.

Q: What are the housing accommodations for youth pastors?

A: Pastors, Youth Pastors and adult leaders will be housed in a hotel-like lodge at Longridge. Please note that the leaders will probably be in the room with other leaders, possibly from other churches.

Q: What time is registration and pickup?

A: Registration begins at 12:30 on Mondays. Camp ends after lunch on Friday. Parents who RSVP are welcome to attend the final lunch and award ceremony. ENTRANCE GATES WILL OPEN AT 12:30PM ON MONDAY. PLEASE SCHEDULE YOUR ARRIVIAL ACCORDINGLY.

Q: How does the Camp Bank work?
A: Longridge operates a Camp Bank in which the students can give their money over to the bank on Monday. They will be assigned a number and when they want to buy something, it will automatically be subtracted from their account. On Friday, they will receive in cash what they did not use from their original amount. This system ensures that money will not be lost or stolen throughout the week. This system is mandatory for Children Weeks and optional for Youth Weeks. Please have your students money ready and separated in envelopes by name at registration.

Q: What should I do if I see Camp Rules violated?

A: If you see camp rules being violated by students that are not from your church, please notify a staffer immediately and we will address the situation.

Q: Can adults from my church come and visit Longridge?

A: We encourage visitors to attend or Wednesday night worship services and stay for the following talent show. Please let us know if and how many visitors will be coming so we can prepare accordingly.

Q: Where is the closest Walmart?

A: One of our more popular questions! Exit the gate of Longridge and take a right. Proceed all the way to the stoplight in Lugoff (15 minutes). Turn left and Walmat/K-mart will be across the bridge.

Q: What time do you lock the gate at night?

A: The gates lock at 11:00pm for safety. If you will arrive back at camp after 11:00pm, please notify our staff supervisor to make arrangements.

Q: Do you have internet access I can use?

A: Be sure to visit our leader’s study.   Here there are comupters, desks, a small library,  and a comfy place to sit back and have some time to yourself or with other leaders.  We also offer free wi-fi coverage in most of our buildings. Just bring a laptop with a wi-fi card and jump on the net!

Q: Do you have phone access for leaders?
A: If you need to contact a parent of your student, let us know and we will give you phone access. For all other calls, there is a pay phone at the lodge. Cell phone service is sporadic but most phones can get a signal somewhere on camp property.

Q: Why do you make it mandatory for students to be at the lake during free time?

A: Our program is relationship driven in which the staff is responsible for student supervision. Allowing the students to swim, play basketball, volleyball, ping-pong or horseshoes at the lake ensures that your students are properly supervised.

Q: Can I bring my children to stay with me in the lodge?

A: Unfortunately, we only have room for church leaders and chaperones in our adult housing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - GENERAL

Q: How much money should I send with my son/daughter?
A: An estimate of $30 for concessions (drinks, candy, chips) and $16 for a camp shirt. Video’s of the week will be available ($8.00) as well as camp CD’s featuring our praise team ($10).

Q: Does my son/daughter need medical insurance?
A: Longridge provides limited coverage. Medical charges in excess of our policy coverage is to be covered by campers personal insurance.

Q: How safe is your camp?
A: Our first priority is camper safety and we go the ‘second mile’ to make sure what we provide is done in safety. Certified lifeguards are always on duty during water front activities.  An EMS team is stationed two miles from our camp.

Q: How can I get in touch with my son/daughter during camp?
A: A camper email system is in place. Write your daughter/son’s name in the subject space and we will get it to them at mealtime. Due to the number of students attending camp they will not be able to respond. You may write them in care of Camp Longridge, PO Box 220. Ridgeway, SC  29290. Do not use the Columbia address for camper mail. In case of emergency you may reach them by calling 803-337-2082.

Q: Should campers bring dress up clothes?
A: No. Casual attire but modest is acceptable for all our activities.

Q: If a camper has been sick can he/she still attend?
A: Camp policy requires that a period of 24 hours must elapse without a fever before a camper can attend. Please protect your students and a host of others from the spread of a virus by not allowing any sick person to come with you. If you question whether one should attend or not please first talk with our camp nurse.

Q: What about prescription medicine?
A: It must be checked in with the camp nurse upon registration at camp. Please bring all medicine in a zip-lock bag with name clearly written on it. Include inside the bag typed instructions concerning dosage and time it should be administered.

Q: Why do you require picture identification?
A: Safety is our foremost concern here at Camp Longridge and having a picture ID of students on hand could save valuable time in event of an emergency.

Ropes Course Philosophy

The Trey Watry Ropes Course offers your group a chance to play, learn, and grow together in the beauty of God’s creation. We provide all the gear you will need and a staff of highly trained facilitators to run the course. Our course is ideal for school groups, youth groups, church groups, women’s groups, men’s groups, office groups… or just about any type of group you can think of… we would love to have you here!

“Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”
Hebrews 11:1

Challenge by Choice - At Longridge, our challenge course elements are always “challenge by choice.” This means the choice to participate and the level of participation is always put in the hands of the participant. Our staff encourages each participant to set a personal goal before he or she begins the element. Whether you complete all the elements and scream all the way down our giant swing or you overcome fears by simply climbing halfway up the cargo tunnel, participant’s level of engagement is up to you!

Experiential Learning -Our Ropes Course is experience-based learning. We learn together what it means to take risks, to have faith in other people and to trust in a God bigger than ourselves. From these experiences we learn and grow. It is our hope at Longridge that each participant will learn more about themselves and the group as a whole during their participation in our course.

Worship – God created us for passionate and abundant life. Throughout scripture, we see God calling people out of their safety zones and urging them to take faithful risks. Abraham was called to leave his homeland and Peter was called to step out of the boat. Both believed that God’s grace was big enough to secure their safe passage. The ropes course is an environment where we begin taking risks and learn what steps of faith can mean for our lives. As in life, the ropes course demands physical, mental and emotional trust in that which is bigger than ourselves. We hope that this experience will provide the basis for fruitful discussions and practices in your group.

Mission Statement

Mission Statement
Dwight L. Moody said, ” I look upon the world as a wrecked vessel, its ruin coming nearer and nearer. God has given me a life boat and said, “Moody, Save all you can.” I have heard the same call and am seeking to get all in “the life boat” I possibly can before our Lord tells me it’s time to dock. This ministry is dedicated to the evangelism of the lost, the edification of the saved, and the exaltation of our wonderful Savior.

Frank Shivers Evangelistic Association Statement of Faith
The sole basis of our beliefs is the Bible. We believe it to be the infallible and inerrant Word of God verbally and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit. We believe in the virgin birth, sinless life, atoning death and triumphant resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe in future judgment and man’s eternal existence after death in Heaven or Hell. We believe Acts 20:21 which teaches that man is only saved by exercising “repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.” With all the saints we look forward to the second coming of Christ to earth - personally, visibly and bodily - to complete the eternal plan of God that was formed from the foundation of the world.

Longridge History

The Frank Shivers Evangelistic Association operated its first student camp in the summer of 1976. The success of these camps prompted a decision to investigate the possibility of acquiring a camp facility for this ministry.

On a cloudy December day in 1980 Board Members of this ministry toured a closed camp in Ridgeway, South Carolina seeking to ascertain God’s direction regarding its acquisition. The camp was desolate, in dire need of repair and upkeep. I never will forget how this group of men knelt upon the lake dock and cried out to God regarding His will concerning its purchase. The sun pierced through the clouds as we prayed but more than that the Son illumined our darkness revealing the green light to proceed with the camp’s purchase. Financially, from man’s standpoint the purchase price was an impossibility but by faith the Board proceeded trusting God to make provision which He did. The manner in that God provided which at times was the 11th hour to pay annual payments is a story in and of itself.

In June, 1981 the Frank Shivers Evangelistic Association officially offered its first summer camp program at CAMP LONGRIDGE. God has enabled this ministry to annually provide such camps continuously to the present date without exception. It is estimated that in excess of 20,000 students have entered the gates at Longridge to experience its ministry resulting in nearly 4000 professions of faith. Additionally, God has called out a number of students into full -time Christian work at Longridge.

Presently Longridge is pressing forward in the development of its Master Concept Plan drafted by Harrison and Associates and the Board of Directors. This plan may be viewed in detail on this website. Longridge is committed to ministry, “Making champions for Christ’ until He comes and the work is then done. The future is bright and exciting for Camp Longridge. Why not catch the vision of its possibilities and “Come over and help us.”

Camp Longrigdge is non-profit organization under the banner of the Frank Shivers Evangelistic Association. The FSEA is governed by a Board of Directors. Camp Longridge is a member of the Christian Camp and Conference Association.
